Welcome to IAT-334! (May 6 - May 8)
An introduction to IAT-334
Thank-you for joining the Summer 2024 version of Interface Design! Announcements in this course will clarify and remind you about:
- Any changes to the plan for lectures or labs (i.e. schedule, activities, etc).
- Project or other large grade releases.
- Provide answers to questions that have come up a lot.
While we will aim to keep these announcements as succinct as possible this week's announcement is a bit long as we are covering a bit more introduction. Thanks for your patience!
The teaching team
We — Andrew Hawryshkewich (your lecturer) and Alfredo Sherman and Cynthia Cui (your TAs) — will be teaching the course this term. We are available at ac.ufs@h_werdna and ac.ufs@namrehs_oderfla and ac.ufs@iuc_aihtnyc.
Course overview
To make sure you understand what you can expect of Interface Design, I recommend reading through:
- The course syllabus gives an overview of course expectations.
- The course illness policy in case you need to miss a class due to illness.
- Our schedule for Summer 2024 shows what will be happening from week-to-week.
Communicating with the class
Please make sure any communications in the class follow our Email and conduct rules outlined in the syllabus.
We will have four options for communicating about the course:
Please allow up to 2 business days for responses though we will typically reply much sooner. We may be able to answer questions about software or code via email or course chat depending on the complexity. We do not provide design critique via email or course chat. Please arrange a meeting or attend office hours for design critique or complex software or code questions.
To make our responses faster, please include the following in your email:
- Your full name.
- The course number (IAT-334).
- Your lab number.
- A clear question.
Course chatroom
We are using Discord this term for our 'course chat'. To join please:
- Sign up for the service (linked through Canvas).
- Once signed up you can access the chat through the Discord apps.
A reminder that we do not provide design critique via chat. Do not post student IDs or other personal info to Discord.
Office hours
Please message or email us to let us know to expect you.
Office hours with Andrew are at:
- Tuesdays from 2:30 - 3:30pm online via Zoom (linked through Canvas).
- Wednesdays from 4:30 - 5:30pm at the SFU Surrey Mezzanine.
Office hours with TAs will be announced before the second lecture.
Lecture
There will be time during most of our lectures to accommodate questions or support.
To prepare for our first class
Please make sure to have the following ready to go for this week's lecture time:
Please be prepared to take notes by hand
Laptop and phone use will not be permitted during lecture time without prior permission. Please come prepared to take notes by other means.
Please bring or borrow a laptop
We will be doing code tutorials during our class times. It is very helpful for your ability to practice and follow along if you have a laptop with you. If you do not have your own the SFU Library has laptops available for loan.
Reading reflections
The reading reflections are completed in lecture. You can bring a highlighted copy of the reading to lecture if you would like, but the reflection itself will need to be completed when we have open/critique time. I will bring copies of the reading to class this week but in future weeks you will need to provide your own printed copy.
Volunter note-taker
The Center for Accessible Learning is looking for a volunteer note taker for the course this term. There will be an email in your inbox within the next couple days that will contain the details if you are interested and willing to be the note-taker for the course.
